Late Winter into Spring at the Hide

Late winter is a subtle but important time for kingfishers here. The pond and reflection pool stay ice-free, the fish are visible, and the site remains part of the bird’s daily landscape — even if things feel quieter to us at times.

As the days slowly lengthen, behaviour begins to shift. Flights become more purposeful, perches are checked more often, and familiar routes re-emerge. This is a period of assessment. Kingfishers are getting ready — strengthening pair bonds, defining feeding areas, and tuning back into places that consistently offer clear water and reliable fishing.

By early spring, the change is noticeable. Activity becomes more regular, perches are used repeatedly, and feeding sessions stretch out. Once a routine settles in, it tends to stay that way. This is when the hide really comes alive — with repeated visits, patient perching, and those moments photographers wait all year for.

What makes this site special is consistency. The water stays clear, the surroundings remain quiet, and nothing is rushed. The kingfisher is allowed to move at her own pace, and when she does settle into a regular routine at the hide, she does so confidently and on her terms.

Late winter is the calm before it all clicks back into place. Spring is when the rhythm returns.
