Kingfisher Pair Settles into Winter Territory at the Hide.

Our kingfishers have truly made the hide and surrounding lakes their home. A bonded male and female are now both using the reflection pool and adjacent lakes daily — a strong indication that this area has become their shared winter territory.

Over recent weeks, guests have enjoyed remarkable encounters, with both birds often appearing within minutes of each other. The female, slightly bolder and more dominant, frequently takes the prime perches along the reflection pool, while the male patrols nearby, often returning with fish from the lake.

Their calm, confident behaviour shows how comfortable they’ve become here. Long visits, relaxed preening, and even side-by-side moments on perches all signal early signs of pair bonding — the foundation of their future breeding partnership.

As we move through winter, both birds will continue to hunt across the wildlife pond, reflection pool and adjacent lakes, maintaining their territory, strengthening their bond. By late winter, we may even see the first displays of courtship and nest-site inspection — and with two chambers already built into the bank, there’s a real possibility that this pair could choose to raise their young right here next spring.
